HANCOX FAMILY

This is an attempt to show the ancestry of Sidney Daniel HANCOX who married Maud Stephanie BARRET

Up to Generation 7 Thomas HANCOX and Rachel DARBY it relies on the research which others may challenge but looks positive to me with the family holding good positions in Dudley.

In Generation 5 No 5 Herbert HANCOX married Elizabeth DUDLEY and one may speculate that she was of the DUDLEY-SUTTON family, Barons Of Dudley [ of nearby Dudley Castle ] for many generations.

An Elizabeth DUDLEY was born abt 1696 daughter of Thomas Dudley and  Martha Eccleshall

There are also claims that Rachel DARBY has this DUDLEY - SUTTON ancestry and if proved they can trace their roots through marriages to many of the Norman families and even to William The Conqueror.

EDWARD SUTTON, LORD DUDLEY: The last SUTTON, Lord of Dudley had eleven illegitimate children all by the same mistress, Elizabeth TOMLINSON, a collier's daughter of Dudley Town. born Abt. 1555, and died 1643

his daughter JANE DUDLEY ALIAS  SUTTON   married RICHARD PARKHOUSE

their daughter MARGARET PARKES  married JOHN DARBEY Abt. 1640.

their son EDWARD DARBEY  born 1646, died 1726 married MARY COOPER. [ he was Rachel's DARBAY's gg grandfather, Edward 1646-1726]

The ancestry of Edward SUTTON Lord DUDLEY includes such notables as John of Gaunt, Edward III, Thomas STANLEY Earl of Derby, Henry 'Hotspur' PERCY of Northumberland, Ralph NEVILLE Lord of Raby and Earl of Westmorland, Elizabeth WOODVILLE (queen of Edward IV), and a whole host of medieval and early renaissance kings, queens, knights, lords and ladies from history going back into pre-history

Richard de Sutton b abt 1225, probably of Sutton on Trent, Nottinghamshire, is the first recorded name of the family and it seems he came to England after the conquest.

Marriage  for HERBERT HANCOX and ELIZABETH DUDLEY:Marriages:   Spouse:  ELIZABETH DUDLEY    Marriage:  20 FEB 1736   Dudley, Worcester,

He became Mayor of Dudley in 1764.  His wife, Elizabeth Dudley, appears to have been the sister of Thomas Dudley, a tallow chandler, who also became Mayor in 1765.  They were daughter and son of William Dudley, a yeoman.  There were a great many people with the surname 'Dudley' in the town, who were not closely related to the Sutton lords of Dudley.  Indeed, some of Lord Dudley's illegitimate children married other Dudleys, for whom a blood connection has not been found.  Herbert and Elizabeth Hancox had only one son who became Mayor, this being Edward Hancox, in 1784.  Herbert Hancox was buried 17 Jul.1772.  Elizabeth was buried 18 Jan.1760 (both Dudley).

Mayor of Dudley  also his 2 sons became Mayor

10.  HERBERT HANCOX  was born Abt. 1746 in Dudley.

Son of the above Herbert and Elizabeth, bapt. 26 Dec.1746, is not the one who married Sobieski Round.  (This latter was another Herbert, bapt. 7 Jun.1747, to William and Hannah, who died about 1784, and he is not of our line.)  Our Herbert does not appear to have married.  He was instrumental in establishing the first bank in Dudley, in co-partnership with others.  He died 23 Sep.1789 (Gentlemen's Magazine) after which his brother, Edward, was the most active member of the family in banking, until he himself went bankrupt about 1803.

Marriage for RICHARD HANCOX and MARTHA RHODES:  Spouse:  MARTHA RHODES Marriage:  14 AUG 1775   Sedgley, Stafford

Richard and Martha Hancox are not known for sure to have settled in Gornal.  They moved between churches/chapels for baptism of their children, including Dudley St. Thomas, Ruiton Independent Chapel (Upper Gornal), and latterly Tipton St. Martin's.  Richard and his son Thomas appear in 1810 as witnesses to the registration of Providence Baptist Chapel, Coseley, so it is more likely they had settled there.  He is described in his will of 1825 as a 'Gentleman of Sedgley' - meaning probably 'parish', not 'village' - though he was buried at Dudley (St. Thomas') 5 Dec.1825.  Martha was also buried there, 12 Jun.1834.

NOTE;- Of these, the only ones apparently surviving at the time of Richard's will, were Abiathar, Thomas, William, James, Susannah and Esther.  Knowledge of the daughter named Mary has recently come to light from details, copied by another researcher, from a will of a Frances Parker, widow, who died in 1817.  It is clear from the will that this Frances was a sister of Richard Hancox.  In it, are mentioned children of Richard, including "Mary, the wife of Joseph Addenbrook".  The Staffs. IGI shows a marriage for Mary Hancox to Joseph Addenbrook, 5 Dec.1803, at Rowley Regis.  No further information about Mary or her husband has yet been found.

12.  THOMAS HANCOX  was born 1777 in Dudley, Worcester, and died August 11, 1841 in Mamble Square, Coseley, Sedgley. Staffordshire  He married RACHEL DARBY January 26, 1800 in Kingswinford, Stafford.  She was born Abt. 1778 in Sedgley, Staffs, and died November 25, 1861 in Coseley Sedgley Staffs.

Thomas Hancox, died of 'consumption' 11 Aug. 1841 and he was the first of the Hancox family to be buried at Christ Church Coseley, on 17th Aug.  His age was given as 65 years, however, it is more likely he was actually 64.  There is no will for Thomas Hancox.  At that time the family were living in 'Mamble Square'  which no longer exists, though it was then an old quarter which stood roughly at the road junction where the modern swimming baths are situated in Wallbrook, Coseley today.  Thomas and Rachel had nine children, viz: Ann (bapt. Dudley 15 May 1803), Thomas (bapt. Dudley 11 Aug. 1805), Elizabeth (bapt. Tipton 27 Mar. 1808), Abiathar (bapt. Tipton 1 Jul. 1810), Abraham (bapt. Tipton 13 Sept. 1812, bur. Sedgley 31 Dec. 1823), Joseph (bapt. St. Martin's B'ham 29 Nov. 1814), Martha (bapt. Tipton 2 Feb. 1817), William (bapt. Tipton 25 Apr. 1819), James (bapt. Tipton 30 Jun. 1822).

More About THOMAS HANCOX: Burial: 1841, Christchurch, Coseley

Rachel DARBY was the daughter of a man named Abraham DARBEY a farmer from Gornal but he was only a cousin to the family of Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge fame. They certainly have the same ancestors so there is a link to that family if you go back far enough. Rachel's gg grandfather Edward 1645-1726) was the brother of John  (1649-1680) both were the sons of John & Margaret.

no baptism found for Rachel, but eventually I found evidence in the form of a will for a nephew, Thomas DARBY, which proves she was the daughter of Abraham and Ann DARBY of Gornal.  This means that she was a direct descendant of Edward and Mary DARBY (nee COOPER), quakers of Over Gornal

Rachel Hancox "of Coseley" died 25 Nov 1861 from a "paralysis" aged 84 and was buried with her husband at Christchurch, Coseley 1st December 1861. According to her age at burial   83 yrs and 11 months

Marriage for THOMAS HANCOX and RACHEL DARBY:   26 JAN 1800   Kingswinford, Stafford,

Children of THOMAS HANCOX and RACHEL DARBY are:

                   i.    ANN HANCOX, b. 1803, Dudley Staffs; m. (1) CASPER HEWKIN; (19 Jun.1832, Aston, Warks.)

This corresponds with information about the Hancox 'cousins', as given in the will of Thomas Darbey of Sedgley (died 1863).  Caspar Hewkin was a brickmaker from Erdington, who later turned to farming, with fifty acres to his name in 1861.  In 1881, Ann Hewkin was a widow, living with the family of her daughter Mary, at Erdington Hall.  Mary's husband was Joseph Dawson, who farmed 180 acres!

Some years ago I was told by a distant cousin, who's father had done some research of his own, that the eldest daughter Ann married Caspar Hukin.  I've never been able to trace this marriage, however, it is backed up in the will of Thomas Darby, gent. of Sedgley who died in 1863 (Lichfield probate).  He was the only son of William Darby, cordwainer of Sedgley.  Thomas Darby never married or had children, but he did amass a fortune as a land agent, and his will is a huge document in which several legacies to local chapels are detailed, including the establishment of a school to be called the 'Thomas Darby School, adjoining the Congregational Church in Bilston Street, Sedgley (this building stood until about 1971 and it appears in a number of local photographs).  In his will Thomas Darby also bequeathed legacies to his individually named cousins - children of the late Thomas and Rachel Hancox - so confirming an otherwise tenuous link between Rachel and the Darby family of Gornal / Sedgley (Rachel being the sister of William and another brother, Abraham 'Darbye', whose probable signature it is appearing as witness to Thomas and Rachel's marriage at Kingswinford 26 Jan. 1800 - however, there are no known baptisms for Rachel, William or Abraham, the link with Abraham and Ann Darby (nee Tompson) being made through other wills and letters of administration).

Mentioned in the Will of Thomas DARBY as cousin the sum of three hundred pounds each, to be paid to each of them within twelve months next after my decease, ,  And from and after his decease, the said Trustees to stand possessed of the said sum of three hundred pounds, Upon trust, for all and every the children and child of my said Cousin, Ann Hukin, to be equally divided between and amongst them if more than one, and if but one, then to such only child when they and as they, he or she, shall attain the age of twenty one years,  To my said trustees a further sum of three hundred pounds,  Upon trust, to invest the same upon Government or real security with power to alter, vary and transpose the same, into the hands of my Cousin,

13.  ABIATHAR HANCOX was born Abt. 1776 in Dudley, and died 1832.  He married SARAH SOUTHALL April 9, 1798 in St. Peter's Wolverhampton.  She was born 1777 in Sedgley, and died Aft. 1851.ABIATHAR HANCOX  Christening:  14 FEB 1776   Saint Thomas, Dudley, Worcester,Father:  RICHARD HANCOX    Mother:  MARTHA

"He next appears marrying at St. Peter's Wolverhampton, 9 Apr. 1798, to Sarah Southall (both were described as being of that parish but it is clear from other evidence that the Hancox family were moving around the local parishes at this time - at least in terms of where they worshipped).  Abiathar and Sarah's first child, John, was baptised at the relatively new church of St. Martin's Tipton, 6 Jan. 1799 (the old medieval St. Martin's had become disused as it was thought to be unsafe from mining subsidence - when this was found not to be the case, it was later reinstated as St. John's Princes End).  This is more probably an indication that Abiathar and Sarah were living in the Coseley district - perhaps because Richard and Martha had also moved there (their own final children were baptised at St. Martin's)."

14.  ELIZABETH HANCOX  was born 1808.  She married EDWARD ROBINSON April 10, 1832 in Aston, Warks.  Elizabeth (bapt. Tipton 27 Mar. 1808

"The second daughter, Elizabeth Hancox, is now known to have married Edward Robinson at Aston, Warks. 10 Apr. 1832, and they did have a family.  Edward Robinson appears to have combined the trades of painter, plumber and glazier.  Most of their children were baptised at Christ Church, Coseley from 1833 to 1846, though it is evident from the baptismal entries that they had actually set up home at Hill Top, West Bromwich by 1835.  A daughter, Amelia, was also baptised at West Bromwich in 1833, and a few gap years suggest there may have been others baptised there in-between the Coseley entries.  They had at least eight children, including Edward, Amelia, Martha, Elizabeth, Louisa, Jane, John and Sarah, though I have not found any of these on the census to trace them forwards.  However, an Amelia Robinson did witness the marriage of Abiathar Hancox to Mary Ann Jeavons at Sedgley in 1865 - I'd puzzled over who this might be for some years previously."  Mentioned in the Will of Thomas DARBY as cousin and wife of Edward ROBINSON

Children of ELIZABETH HANCOX and EDWARD ROBINSON are:

                   i.    EDWARD ROBINSON.

ii.    AMELIA ROBINSON, b. 1833.  A daughter, Amelia, was also baptised at West Bromwich in 1833, However, an Amelia Robinson did witness the marriage of Abiathar Hancox to Mary Ann Jeavons at Sedgley in 1865 - I'd puzzled over who this might be for some years previously`

15.  ABIATHER  HANCOX  born 1809 in Staffs, and died December 18, 1889 in Coseley Sedgley .  He married MARTHA JEAVONS June 27, 1830 in Saint Peter Or Collegiate, Wolverhampton.  She was born Abt. 1809 in Stafford, and died March 14, 1893 in Coseley Sedgley.

Marriage for ABIATHER HANCOX and MARTHA JEAVONS:  27 JUN 1830   Saint Peter Or Collegiate, Wolverhampton

"Thomas and Rachel's second son was my ancestor, Abiathar.  He may have started off with the intention of following in his father's footsteps and becoming a cordwainer, as entries in Bridgen's Trade Directory for 1833 and 1838 show, however, with the growth in the local iron industry, better pay and prospects were obviously too much of a temptation for Abiathar and his younger brothers, and he became an iron puddler (the Cannon Foundry was begun around 1823 at Deepfields, Coseley, by the Sheldon brothers, one of whom, Edward Sheldon, also lived at Mamble or "Momble" Square in the 1830's. ]

Abiathar married Martha Jeavons at St. Peter's, Wolverhampton 27 Jun. 1830 and their first child, Ann was baptised at Coseley 22 May 1831.  Already, Abiathar's trade was given as 'puddler' so maybe the conflicting directory entries could indicate he was just helping his father out or 'cobbling' as a side-line by this time.  Abiathar and Martha seem to have moved around the Coseley / Brierley area a fair amount, from one census entry to another.  Besides Ann who married Benjamin Cartwright, their children were Abraham (died 1834 aged one year 4 months and like his older namesake buried at Sedgley), Elizabeth (married David Percival), Mary (married David Hampton), Thomas (married Hannah Webb), Martha (no marriage details known), Abiathar (married Mary Ann Jeavons), Lydia (married Daniel Floyd), William (died 1851 aged 3 years 6 months), and Hannah (died 1850 aged 8 weeks).  Abiathar snr. died 1 Dec. 1889 and Martha died in March 1893, both of Green Street

Thomas and Rachel's next child was Martha who married Daniel Hughes, a shingler, at Sedgley 15 Jan. 1843.  They are the ancestors of Pat Hayward's husband Gil.  They are also the ancestors of my paternal second cousin, Anthony Bladen Jones, in his maternal line - so he is related on both my father's and mother's side, which is very confusing indeed!  It is Anthony's wife Fiona who has shown a huge interest in the family history and with whom I've also been corresponding on the side of 'the pond', as they live in New Jersey. Daniel and Martha had nine children - their births recorded in an old family bible.  In about 1853 they moved to Wednesbury and by 1871 Daniel was a widower.

William Hancox was Thomas and Rachel's fifth son.  He became a puddler and married Maria Smallman at Sedgley 22 Nov. 1840.  Maria was the daughter of Job and Mary Smallman (nee Darby) and was actually William's second cousin through Rachel's father, Abraham Darby, and Mary's father, James Darby, being brothers.  William and Maria had eight children baptised at Coseley: William (born 2 Mar. 1841 - married Mary Ann ------- around 1862, died 1914), James (born 1 Nov. 1842 - no marriage details known), Fanny (born 27 Oct. 1844 - no marriage details known), Maria (born 25 Nov. 1846 - married George Potts around 1867), Daniel (born 3 Jul. 1849, buried 21 Mar. 1852 aged 3 years), Dorothea (bap. 19 Jun. 1853 - no marriage details known), Martha (born 7 Feb. 1854 - married John Hill around 1876), and Mary (born 20 Jul. 1856 - no marriage details known).

Both signed their names. Witnesses were: James Reynolds and Mary Hancox.

They had children: Frederick S. b 1879, Thomas b 9/2/1881 d 1/8/1924, Samuel b 1882, Esther b 1884 and Sarah Jane b 1885.

19.  JAMES HANCOX was born 1822 in Sedgley . Christened: June 3, 1822, Tipton Staffs  He married MARTHA TROYLOE February 22, 1852 in Sedgley .  She was born Bef. February 2, 1817 in Sedgley

Thomas and Rachel's youngest child was James who also became a puddler of iron.  He married at Sedgley to Martha Troyloe 22 Feb. 1852 and, like his brothers, could sign his name.  James and Martha's children included: James (born 20 Jul. 1852), Enoch (born 18 Sep. 1854), Martha (born 15 Sep. 1856), Richard (born 26 Feb. 1859), Rachel (born circa 1863), Thomas (born circa 1866), Alexander (born circa 1868) and William (buried 1 Mar. 1871 aged only 3 weeks).  James and Martha left the area some time after 1871, moving to Chasetown and Burntwood, Staffs.

James Hancox you mention to be the same as 'Jim' Hancox of Burntwood, Staffs., who contacted me at the end of last year, though I may be wrong.  He told me specifically about an amateur oil painting he has of 'The Last Supper', purported to be by a Hancox ancestor - dated to the early 19th century.  I replied, saying how much I'd like to see this painting but unfortunately I have not had time to follow this up this year.  He did not mention that his gt grandfather was an art teacher, however, so I'm now wondering if that's how the painting came into being? I think it is correct that Jim is descended from James and Martha (nee TROYLOE) not Daniel and Lavinia, but again from what you've said, I could be wrong.

Richard and Martha Hancox's eldest son was Abiathar who married Sarah Southall and promptly settled in Gornal.  Their eldest son was John who married Ann Southall.  However, John died in 1830, predeceasing his father (both were buried at Ruiton Independent Chapel).  Ann then appears to have remarried quite soon to Cornelius Dudley (her infant daughter Frances would have been less than a year old and she'd have needed the support apart from anything else, but it's obvious her new husband was also a love match as they had a son, William, within a year or two).  Here they are, then, in Pensnett.  Missing are two daughters, Esther (born 1826) and Mary Ann (born c.1828) - the latter had an illegit. child in 1847 prior to marrying Thomas Marsh

Children of JOHN HANCOX and ANN SOUTHALL are:

21.  ABIATHAR HANCOX  was born March 13, 1812 in Coseley Sedgley  He married  (1) MARY ADDENBROOKE of Upper Gornal daughter of John Addenbrooke and Elizabeth (nee Underhill).

(according to E. A. Underhill's 'History of the Manor of Sedgley').   Elizabeth Underhill was in turn a daughter of Thomas Underhill and Ann (nee Darby).  This Ann Darby was half-sister to Abraham Darby of Gornal, making her an aunt of Rachel Darby, who married Thomas Hancox!  It seems likely that the Mary Addenbrooke shown here, was also related to the Joseph Addenbrook who is now known to have married a daughter of Richard and Martha Hancox, also named Mary

Proved at Lichfield the twelfth day of August 1893 by the oaths of Abiathar (in the Will spelt Abiatha and Abithar) Hancox the son and William Cartwright the Grandson the Executors to whom Administration was granted.

Both Abiathar 'the elder' (15) and Abiathar 'the younger' (25) of Coseley, were iron puddlers, most likely working for Coseley's biggest employer, 'Cannon Hollow-ware Company' (actually established in 1826), which became 'Cannon Foundry'.  However, the younger Abiathar appears to have retired from the trade in the 1890's, becoming instead a 'wardrobe dealer'.  This was probably in connection with his wife, Mary Ann's, business as a tailoress, which operated from workrooms at the back of the family home in Green Street.  Several women were employed in this activity, several of them relatives, doing out-work for Dudley tailors, etc.  It was more probably from these activities that Abiathar amassed his fortune, as shown in his will - a very large sum in those days!  I have recently learned that he also owned several properties in the area, which were sold off after his and Mary Ann's deaths.  Two of these properties, however, remained in the family for a few more years, including 16, Green Street.

Children of ABIATHER HANCOX and MARY ANN JEAVONS are:

                i. THOMAS HANCOX bapt. 19 May 1867 (Christ Church, Coseley).  Died 8 May 1882, at 16, Green Street, of 'acute pneumonia', aged almost 16.  His was the first nonconformist burial at Christ Church, 11 May 1882.  He is recorded on the same headstone as his parents, Abiathar and Mary Ann

ii. MARTHA ANN HANCOX  bapt. 24 Sep.1868 (Park Lane Methodist Church, Tipton).  She was known as 'Patty'.  She married CHARLES TURNER in 1890, who worked at 'Cannon Foundry' for over fifty years, and was also a Methodist lay preacher.  They did not have any children.  Following Patty's death in about 1950, Charles apparently remarried, to a lady around half his age, named May Podesta!

25A       iii. MATILDA HANCOX born 22 Dec.1869 (bapt. 24 Jul. 1870  Christ Church).  She was known as'Tilly'.  She married Walter Rowlatt HAWKINS , 1 Jul.1893, at Park Lane Methodist Church, Tipton.  Walter (born 9 Apr.1870) was another prominent 'Cannon' employee, where he became works manager, and also a Methodist lay preacher

iv. WILLIAM HANCOX bapt. 16 Feb.1873 (Christ Church).  Known as 'Bill'.  He worked as an iron moulder at 'Cannon Foundry'.  He married three times - [1] Margaret Mary Ann LATHAM, in 1897, by whom there were three children who all died young (these were Maud, died 1903 aged 6; Mary Ann, died 1903 aged 3; and Lily LATHAM, died 1929, aged 22).  Margaret died 20 Jun.1923, aged 52.  [2] Elizabeth FLAVEL, details not known, though she died about 1933 following a gall bladder operation.  They lived at 10a, Canal Street, Roseville, one of the properties previously owned by Abiathar and Mary Ann.  [3] Beatrice FLAVEL (sister of Elizabeth), married about 1934.  William died 11 Dec.1951 and was outlived by Beatrice, who died 13 May 1968.

            v. SARAH JANE HANCOX bapt. 21 Sep.1873 (Christ Church).  Known as 'Jane'.  She married William Frederick ROUND (known as 'Fred') 6 Sep.1897, at Park Lane Methodist Church, Tipton.  Fred was a railway signalman.  They did not have any children.  After the deaths of Abiathar and Mary Ann Hancox, Fred and Jane Round purchased 16, Green Street, where they lived for several years.  Later, however, they lived in Ivyhouse Lane.  Fred died about 1941, and Jane in about 1961

42.         vi. POLLIE HANCOX This spelling is correct! - born 30 Apr.1876 (bapt. 18 Jun. Christ Church).

vii. ABRAHAM HANCOX bapt. 28 Jul. 1878 (Christ Church).  Known as 'Abe'.  He worked as an iron moulder at 'Cannon Foundry'.  He married twice.  His first wife was Minnie ROUND, a sister of Sarah Jane Hancox's husband, Fred Round .  They did not have any children.  Minnie died in 1924, and Abe remarried to Matilda Elizabeth HAWKINS some years later.  They lived at 'Castlemere' in Ivyhouse Lane.  Abe's second wife was a niece of Walter Rowlatt Hawkins (husband of Matilda Hancox (iii)).  Abe and Matilda had one son, Alan HANCOX born 1943.  Abe died 3 Oct. 1956.  Matilda died in 1965.

viii. THOMAS HANCOX bapt. 28 Jan.1883 (Christ Church), was born only about 7 months after his older namesake died.  Known as 'Tom', he was chief clerk for 'Cannon Foundry'.  He was also superintendant of the Sunday school at Roseville Wesleyan Chapel, Coseley.  He married Lois Priscilla LATHAM in 1908.  She was a sister of Margaret Latham, the first wife of William Hancox (iv).  Tom and Lois also lived in Ivyhouse Lane.  They had two children, Walter HANCOX born 1912  and Enid HANCOX Tom died of pneumonia in 1933.

55.  ABIATHAR HANCOX was born 1858 in Sedgley.  He married SARAH ? Abt. 1885.  Bpts Abiather 02 APR 1858 Lower Gornall, Stafford,

Abiathar snr. of Ruiton had a son John who died in 1830, and John had a son Abiathar in 1823 (nephew of the Abiathar of Ruiton/Upper Gornal as described above)?   Fine so far, right well, this younger Abiathar married 4 Jun. 1848 - my records say Dudley but I can't find which church at the moment.  Anyway, he married a Mary Ann Wright and so as not to confuse himself with his own uncle he went and settled in Lower Gornal, or Gornal Wood to be specific - so we have an upper and a lower Abiathar!

It would appear that this lower Abiathar's mother Ann had remarried after John's death, namely to Cornelius Dudley, and in 1841 they were living in Pensnett (will have to hunt for this census entry).  Young Abiathar's sister Mary Ann appears to have had an illegit. son named William before marrying to Thomas Marsh (St. James Lwr. Gornal bapt. 16 Oct. 1847, Thomas William, son of Mary Ann Hancocks, Gornal Wood, Housemaid, b.23 Sept.) and in 1851 the family were as follows;
